چکیده

We report the discovery of fifteen previously unknown Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars found as part of an infrared broad-band study of candidate WR stars in the Galaxy. We have derived an empirically-based selection algorithm which has selected ∼5000 WR candidate stars located within the Galactic Plane drawn from the GLIMPSE (midinfrared) and 2MASS (near-infrared) catalogues. Spectroscopic follow-up of 184 of these reveals eleven WN and four WC-type WR stars. Early WC subtypes are absent from our sample and none show evidence for circumstellar dust emission. Of the candidates which are not WR stars, ∼120 displayed hydrogen emission line features in their spectra. Spectral features suggest that the majority of these are in fact B supergiants/hypergiants, ∼40 of these are identified Be/B[e] candidates. Here, we present the optical spectra for six of the newly-detected WR stars, and the near-infrared spectra for the remaining nine of our sample. With a WR yield rate of ∼7% and a massive star detection rate of ∼65%, initial results suggest that this method is one of the most successful means for locating evolved, massive stars in the Galaxy.

A near–infrared survey for Galactic Wolf-Rayet stars

Initial results, techniques, and rationale for a near–infrared survey of evolved emission–line stars toward the Galactic Center are presented. We use images taken through narrow-band emission–line and continuum filters to select candidates for spectroscopic follow–up. The filters are optimized for the detection of Wolf-Rayet stars and other objects which exhibit emission–lines in the 2 μm regio...

A census of the Wolf-Rayet content in Westerlund 1 from near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy

New NTT/SOFI imaging and spectroscopy of the Wolf-Rayet population in Westerlund 1 are presented. Narrow-band near-IR imaging together with follow up spectroscopy reveals four new Wolf-Rayet stars, of which three were independently identified recently by Groh et al., bringing the confirmed Wolf-Rayet content to 24 (23 excluding source S) – representing 8% of the known Galactic Wolf-Rayet popula...

A hidden population of Wolf-Rayet stars in the massive galactic cluster Westerlund 1

We report the discovery of a hitherto undetected population of Wolf-Rayet stars in the young galactic open cluster Westerlund 1. Optical spectroscopy of the cluster identified 11 such objects; provisional classification suggests that 6 are nitrogen rich (WN) and 5 carbon rich (WC). Including the previously identified Blue, Yellow & Red Super& Hypergiants, Westerlund 1 clearly has a very rich po...

Synthesis Models for Starburst Populations with Wolf-Rayet Stars

The prospects of utilizing Wolf-Rayet populations in starburst galaxies to infer the stellar content are reviewed. I discuss which Wolf-Rayet star features can be detected in an integrated stellar population. Specific examples are given where the presence of Wolf-Rayet stars can help understand galaxy properties independent of the O-star population. I demonstrate how populations with small age ...
